The Plan
Make a guest list & plan your menu (we've got tons of ideas). Pick the night & time - schedules are busy this time of year, so plan in advance.
Get Organized
Assign responsibilities to your guests. We've included a variety of dishes for a festive dinner party. Select your favourite ideas from the list. Print them off & hand them out to your guests in advance.
Set-Up
Prepare your course (appetizers) in advance and have everything ready when your guests arrive. By taking on the appetizers you can reduce the risk of the appetizers arriving late. Try to leave the oven free for the main course when it arrives. Make sure your fridge or freezer has some space in case the dessert needs to be kept cool. Set the table with the proper cutlery, glasses and plates. You'll know what is required since you planned the menu.
If you want to serve the meal buffet style, set up a table that is ready for your guests when they arrive. Set up a separate table for serving coffee & dessert. If serving wine, organize the bottles in an accessible spot. If you have a little extra time, print a menu for each of your guests. Roll & tie them with a bit of gold ribbon for a festive touch.
The Event
With you as the conductor, let your guests orchestrate their part of the meal. Encourage everyone to bring serving containers & utensils for their course (these can be sent home with them at the end of the evening to share in the clean-up). With the oven set and space cleared in the fridge or freezer, your guests can make themselves at home when their turn comes. Enjoy the evening with your guests - you may never go back to the 'other' style of entertaining again.
