Tips for Trick or Treating

Get a good fit! Make sure costumes fit properly. Baggy pants and billowy sleeves can get in the way or cause kids to slip going up and down stairs. The same goes for sandals or high heels, both of which can make walking difficult or dangerous.

Night vision. For better visibility at night, choose light coloured costumes, instead of dark whenever possible. Also, look for flame resistant materials, and if your child can't be anything other than a witch dressed all in black, insist on reflective tape. Be sure to have a flashlight handy and trick-or-treat only at familiar, well-lit houses.

Choose make-up over masks. Use make-up to create scary faces, so kids can see properly at all times.

Walk, don't run. Not only are cars still on the streets, but there are tons of other kids just as excited and full of energy. Always walk from house to house, especially in high traffic areas.

Look both ways. Use the sidewalk at all times and look both ways before you cross; if there is no path, walk against the flow of traffic.

Off they go! For older kids that are still young enough to trick or treat, set a time limit and help plan the route they'll take.

Use common sense. Never enter a stranger's home under any circumstances! Always inspect your child's candy before they eat it, and discard anything suspicious. If your children are trick-or-treating alone, instruct them not to eat any treats until they return home.

  • Wigs, hats and beards shouldn’t cover eyes or mouth. Be sure headgear won’t slide over the child’s face and obstruct eyesight.
  • Carry a mobile phone for quick communication.
  • Be cautious around lit jack-o'lanterns and candles, especially if your child is wearing loose or baggy clothing.
