Sodium and Activity
Sodium is needed to maintain electrolyte balance for adequate muscle function. It helps prevent muscle cramping and spasms and enhances fluid absorption into the muscle.
Between 200-700 mg of sodium can be lost for every lb. of sweat. Some athletes can lose as much as 4-6 lbs of sweat during a workout. This can translate into 800-4200 mg of sodium lost (fyi – there is about 2000 mg in a tsp. of salt).
Sports drinks provide about 50 to100 mg sodium per cup so if you regularly consume sports drinks during or after activity, depending on the amount you sweat and drink, you will be helping to replace some of your losses. It would be ok to add a little salt to your meals and/or occasionally indulge in a salty snack post workout to help replace your losses.
