Building a Cookie House
Decorating your house for the holidays takes on a delicious new twist when the house is made from cookies. Based on traditional holiday gingerbread houses, Kraft has made construction so easy that you can build a tasty village in no time. All it takes is 8 graham wafers, frosting and our imagination to create these appealing abodes. Gather the kids to help you deck the halls, the roofs and the tasty windows with more frosting, candies and Mini Oreo Bite Size Cookies.
Royal Frosting
BEAT 3 Tbsp meringue powder*, 1/2 tsp cream of tartar and 6 tbsp warm water with electric hand mixer at high speed until blended. Slowly add 2 cups powdered sugar on low speed until blended; beat on high speed about 5 min until stiff peaks form.
COVER icing at all times to prevent hardening. To store several hours or overnight, place plastic wrap directly on surface of icing; refrigerate. Beat with mixer until stiff before using. Makes about 2 1/2 cups.
*Meringue powder is often found in bulk food stores and/or health food stores.
Cookie House
YOU WILL NEED: 8 square. HoneyMaid Graham Wafers, 2 ½ cups Royal Frosting (see above recipe), assorted cookies, crackers and candies to decorate.
USING 1 wafer for floor and 4 for walls, assemble house, sealing all seams with frosting. To form roof support, cut 1 wafer in half diagonally and use frosting to attach cut-sides to opposite ends of house. To complete roof, use frosting to attach 2 more wafers, sealing all edges. Allow house to dry completely.
DECORATE as desired using remaining frosting, cookies, crackers and candies.
Tips
- Cut graham wafers into the right shapes and sizes, using a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion. A straight-edge knife is more likely to break the grahams.
- For sweet snowmen, tie a ribbon around the middle of a large Jet-Puffed Marshmallow. To make hat, slice black gum drop in half for brim and place another whole gumdrop on top. Attach to marshmallow using frosting. For eyes and buttons, use candy sprinkles or dots of colored icing.
