When purchasing avocados, look for those which are of uniform color and have peels that are free of any cracks or with dark sunken spots in places. To help ripen firm avocados, place them in a closed brown paper bag, then let them stand at room temperature until softened. Ripe avocados will have a mild flavour and buttery consistency.
