With January in full swing I’ve been finding myself thinking back on some of my favourite food trends of 2014. There were some pretty wild and interesting trends but the one that stands out the most for me as being the most innovative and the most delicious has been fusion foods! I love the idea of combining two familiar and well-loved dishes to create something entirely new and interesting.

In my humble opinion, the best fusion foods that I’ve come across this year are ones that involved cheese. Oh cheese, glorious cheese! Just imagine combining two of your favourite cheese dishes into one incredible cheesy-delicious explosion! My next food hack will allow you to go much further than just imagining such a fantastic combination, as I’ve combined two of my most beloved dishes - classic grilled cheese and cheese sticks to create Grilled Cheese Dippers, which are perfect to serve alongside your favourite tomato soup.

There’s nothing like indulging in a classic grilled cheese any time of year but when the weather gets cold I can’t help but want to pair my grilled cheese with a comforting bowl of warm tomato soup. There’s something nostalgic and wonderful about dipping a gooey and melty grilled cheese into tomato soup, allowing the bread to sop up all the rich tomato flavours. How do you take a perfect combination like that up a notch? Why, you turn your grilled cheese into the perfect dipping tool - cheese sticks!

Cheese sticks don’t have to be complicated. With this hack, there’s no need for breading or frying, just trim the crust and roll into a stick shape. I couldn’t help but slip one more hack into this recipe, which I was dying to share. The trick to creating the ultimate grilled cheese crust is spreading the outside of the bread with none other than Miracle Whip! Miracle Whip cooks at a slower rate than butter, which means that your sandwich (or dipper!), has more time to brown and get a great crust. This hack is the key to getting that familiar crunch found in cheese sticks!

Get These

  • 4 slices of egg bread (may substitute white or whole grain bread), crusts removed
  • 4 slices Kraft Singles Cheese Slice
  • 4 tbsp Miracle Whip Original Spread

Do This

  1. Using a rolling pin (or a large glass bottle), flatten each slice of bread.
  2. Lay a Kraft Singles on each slice of bread, trimming the cheese to remove any that hangs over the bread.
  3. Carefully roll up each slice of bread, encasing the cheese slice inside.
  4. Spread the outside of each cheese stick with 1 tbsp of Miracle Whip
  5. Heat a medium non-stick pan to medium heat and add the cheese sticks seam side down. Brown the sticks, turning occasionally, until the exterior is crispy and the inside is melted.
  6. Serve immediately alongside your favourite tomato soup.
