There’s no doubt about it, food is an extremely personal thing. Everyone has their favourite foods, least favourite foods, food routines, memories associated with flavours and smells, and so much more. Of course everyone has certain recipes that they’ve made their own, putting in their own personal touches, but I must say that there’s no other dish that allows for as much freedom and personal expression as the taco.

Beyond being an enchanting flavour combination, I think what makes tacos so alluring is the fact that it grants so much freedom of choice, allowing each person to create something that reflects their own personal taste. Everyone has their favourite taco toppings, as well as their own unique way of filling and eating their tacos, and, of course, a preference of hard vs. soft tacos.

The divide between those who prefer a soft and malleable taco shell, versus those that love a crisp and delicate taco shell seems to be even. I tend to go back and forth depending on the filling, with a hard taco shell winning me over whenever I’m looking for a textural contrast. No matter your preference, one thing is clear, whenever you’re serving tacos there’s always going to be a hard vs. soft taco debate.

So how do you cater taco night to reflect both hard and soft taco shell enthusiasts without having to purchase both types? You know the answer! With a food hack! By simply draping small, soft tortillas over the bars of an oven rack and baking until crisp, you will have the most perfect hard taco shells ready to be stuffed with your favourite fillings. What I love about these homemade hard taco shells is that the width between the bars of the oven rack creates a flat base for your shells, eliminating the issue of having your hard tacos topple over and spilling the filling onto your plate.


Get These

  • 4 small soft tortillas
  • 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken
  • ¼ cup Bull’s-Eye Chicken & Rib Renegade Barbecue Sauce
  •  1 Tbsp Sriracha Sauce (hot chili sauce)
  • ¼ cup salsa
  • ¼ cup Kraft Mexicana Shredded Cheese
  • 1 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 Tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped

Do This

  1. Preheat oven or toaster oven to 350ºF.
  2. Drape each tortilla over two bars of the wire rack in the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until crispy. Carefully remove with tongs, and cool.
  3. While the tortillas are baking, prepare the filling. In a medium bowl stir together the shredded chicken with the barbecue sauce and the Sriracha sauce. Set aside.
  4. Evenly divide the prepared chicken, salsa, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, and cilantro between the four crispy taco shells. Serve immediately.
