  • Combine all ingredients except pickling spices in stockpot or very large saucepan. Wrap pickling spices in cheesecloth (or place in diffuser ball). Add to ingredients in pot.
  • Bring to boil on medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 1-1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove and discard pickling spices. Cool ketchup to room temperature. Transfer to airtight containers. Store in refrigerator up to 1 month.


Substitute 2 lb./1 kg fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped, for the canned tomatoes.

Keeping it Safe

Prepared ketchup can be stored in refrigerator up to 1 month. For longer storage, spoon into freezer containers and freeze up to 3 months. Or store in sealed sterile jars at room temperature up to 1 year.
