  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and cheese in large bowl.
  • Add milk and butter; stir until mixture forms soft dough. Place in greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  • Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean and top is golden brown. Cool in pan on wire rack 10 minutes. Remove from pan; cool completely. Cut into 16 slices to serve.

    The first time I made it, I too, found it heavy. The 2nd time, i followed your readers' suggestions and added a little more baking powder, and it was great. I've made it with garlic, with cayenne and with bacon. All were good! When it is cool, I slice it and wrap it well in plastic wrap and then in a freezer bag and keep handy in the freezer. Since I live alone, this way I can take out 1 or 2 slices, toast them and they are great.

    I love this recipe! I used marble cheese, because that's what's in my fridge, I added extra baking powder and about a tblspn more milk and it turned out delicious! Perfect for toasting and butter! I will make this again and again!
