The best brunch hosts know how to make French toast and serve a memorable spread. Guests needn’t know your delicious French toast also happens to be a tasty way to use stale bread. Armed with just a few ingredients and these Kraft Kitchens-approved tips on how to make French toast, you’ll be ready to serve something to boast about.
Originally a way to use up stale bread, French toast makes a delicious addition to any breakfast or brunch menu. Gather the ingredients (egg, milk, bread and sugar), then whisk the egg, sugar and milk in a shallow dish until blended.
Dip bread slices, 1 at a time, in the egg mixture, turning to evenly coat both sides of bread slice. (To prevent the cooked French toast from being soggy, dip the bread in the egg mixture for just about 15 sec. on each side, but making sure the bread slice is evenly moistened on both sides.) Place soaked bread slices in single layer on plate. Let stand while you heat up the skillet.
Place large heavy nonstick skillet on stove top. (If using a regular skillet, spray it with cooking spray or melt small amount of butter in skillet to prevent French toast from sticking.) Add dipped bread slices to hot skillet, being careful to not crowd the bread slices in the skillet. Cook 2 min. on each side or until desired doneness. (For best results, cook just 2 French toast slices at a time.)
Drizzle the French toast with maple syrup. If desired, serve with your favourite fresh fruit, such as blueberries and/or raspberries, or applesauce. For a change of pace, omit the syrup and sprinkle the French toast with ground cinnamon, cinnamon-sugar or icing sugar. Round off the breakfast or brunch menu with cooked bacon or sausage.
